A BOWLING club welcomed a special guest to open its 75th season.

Queenborough Bowling Club played host to the town’s mayor Cllr Carol Champ. Glasses were raised, a new flag unfurled and a celebratory cake cut. Around half the club’s 100 members took part in the festivities with vice-secretary Janet Barrows saying it was a brilliant day. She thanked team captain and green keeper, John Crouch and all the others who helped produce a “superb looking green”.

The club, which was founded in 1935, has been recognised by the Kent County Bowling Association for its green. Over the years, it has enjoyed successes in many competitions including county matches. In 2008 it won the Medway League Triple and the Island League.

The oldest member is Stan Mason, 86, who was part of the original bowling team from the age of 12. Roy Masters and Ron Hunn were also original members and are still active bowlers. The youngest member is Jack Jarvis, 15, who joined last year. There is also a very successful ladies’ team which was founded in 1980. Four other original members -Mary Jackson, Jean Masters, Pit Hunn and Dawn Burke- are also still very actively involved in the club.

The new season has just begun and new members are welcome. Anyone who is interested should contact club secretary David Luck on 01795 666505.
